Unsent Letters
Unsent Letters (March 2021) is a collection of poems, representing letters: some unsent, some received, to family, other loved ones (or so she thought), the universe, and mainly to the author herself. This book speaks on mental health: ADHD, anxiety, burnout, LGBTQ+ issues, gender-role expectations, and attachment needs. This is the author’s coming out story told through poetry. Through unsent letters from her 14-year-old closeted queer self, overcoming internalized oppression while navigating generalized anxiety and ADHD, as well as unsent letters from her 26-year-old self, still longing for love.
Aside from hopeless romanticism, one theme Julia draws from is her psychology background and learning how to help yourself through writing. Coping via the writing of a letter (or a text message/phone note), that you may never end up sending to the intended recipient, becomes just as rejuvenating as sending those words you just needed to say. This concept comes to light through certain poems where she doesn't write to a person, but to an emotion. 'Dear Anxiety,' 'Dear Grief' she navigates the reflection of her self-discovery journey.
